United Kingdom Extends Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Alert Roster with Eleven Countries
The UK authorities has added eleven further countries to its official advisory roster concerning the threats of toxic alcohol poisoning from tainted alcoholic drinks.
This expanded travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "an international surge in the frequency of documented incidents" of methanol poisoning.
Only a few weeks ago, authorities had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, after multiple high-profile cases including the fatal death of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being warned that even tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can lead to vision loss or fatality within 12 to 48 hours.
What is Methanol and How is it Employed?
Methanol is a harmful industrial alcohol typically used in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. It is not designed for drinking.
While it is naturally produced during the production of beverages, reputable manufacturers lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for drinking through the distillation process.
But in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into beverages to cut costs, and as it is flavorless and smell-free, it is impossible to detect.
Government Advice for Travellers
Government official the minister emphasized that every traveler should know the signs of industrial alcohol toxicity.
"If you're having drinks abroad, stick to reputable establishments and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or free shots," Falconer advised.
