Acclaimed Performer Dame Patricia Routledge, Legendary for Keeping Up Appearances, Dies at the Age of 96
Actress Patricia Routledge, famous for playing the character Hyacinth Bucket in the beloved television comedy Keeping Up Appearances, has passed away at the age of 96, her agent announced.
Beyond that, she featured in Alan Bennett's TV monologues and portrayed the BBC's amateur detective Hetty Wainthropp.
"It is with great sadness to share the death of Dame Patricia Routledge, who left this world peacefully in her sleep this morning with loved ones near."
"At the remarkable age of 96, her love for performing and for reaching out to fans remained strong, just as modern audiences are still enjoying her roles through her cherished screen performances."
The announcement added: "She will be dearly missed by her inner circle and by her dedicated supporters around the world."
A Life in the Spotlight
Dame Patricia was best known as Hyacinth Bucket - with the affected pronunciation "bouquet" - a funny persona who exemplified the height of British social climbing.
"Hyacinth is a terrible snob and I enjoyed playing her enormously," the performer remarked.
The series Keeping Up Appearances was broadcast from 1990 to 95, and the following year she was voted the UK's favorite actress at the BBC's 60th anniversary awards.
Beyond television, she found acclaim both live and recorded after beginning her professional life in the theatre in the 1950s era.
With performances in London's West End, she established herself in the US when she received the Broadway trophy for leading musical performer on New York theater for the musical Darling of the Day in 1968.
She proved equally skilled at dramatic roles as she was at musicals and comedy - she took part in Shakespeare's histories at the Royal Shakespeare Company, then received an Olivier Award for outstanding musical performance for the production Candide in the 1980s.
That decade also saw her become a true national TV star - receiving parts by Victoria Wood in her comedy series, and writer Alan Bennett in his acclaimed monologue series, including 1988's A Lady of Letters, for which she earned a Bafta nomination.
She garnered additional Bafta nods, for Keeping Up Appearances, in 1992 and 93, then headlined the main character as a retired woman on a quest to solve crimes in Hetty Wainthropp between the late 1990s.
She received an Order of the British Empire in 1993, a CBE in the 2000s, and damehood in recent years.
